EOC Week 9: For those who think young

When speaking about youth I would always want to relate back to celebrities; yes I know that adults can identify with them too, but let’s be real for a second, would you see a man dance for gum or a women walking the streets of New York in a Bomber Jacket dress with neon tights? Both Adidas and Double Mint gum relate to the younger generation in many ways. If we look at both; the youth can identify the celebrities that are featured in both commercials. Well, maybe not in Jeremy Scott’s, but there will be some that the youth culture is familiar with. Either way the music, the people, the fashion is noticed by today’s youth; they can identify with the ad well enough because they are familiar with the people staring in them.
When Jeremy Scott came out with this ad campaign I was really excited. For one I have a lot of respect for Jeremy Scott and his work as a designer. But what I liked most about it is that he validated that the young fashionista is everywhere and they represent who they are by what they wear. It doesn’t matter what time it is, what city they are in; they are who they are with the things that they wear and they represent.  Adidas is a really big brand when it comes to shoes but it’s also famous for their fashion; the ad shows that not only are our shoes in style but so are our clothes, and the brand is worn in every part of the world. The ad represents its self as a universal trend, and the youth are the innovators.
Chris Brown defiantly has a reputation of being a wonderful dancer. Not only that a lot of the younger generation can look up to that characteristic. Dancing is defiantly a movement its self; you express what you’re feeling with your body. Just like in Doublemint Chris Brown represents himself by dancing excitedly and happily while having gum in his mouth. The younger generation can connect with Brown by his dancing. Gum is a chewable mint; if we put both Chris Brown and chewable mint together you get the youth to relate even more.
For any ad to relate to the youth culture I believe you should always use as an identifier for them to relate to. The youth today has no interest in seeing some old guy doing something they really don’t care about. But when an ad shows someone or something they are familiar with, they’ll defiantly show interest.

OPI: "Everyone can be an Artist"

It can be a little frustrating to be in an industry that often uses drawing as a tool to succeed. I for one was never a drawer; this is why I entered the fashion world with an eye for business. But there are times when I do feel like an artist, it may sound silly but just hear me out. Every girl always wants to look pretty whenever they go out. They pay attention to what they should wear, what accessories they use, what appropriate shoes they should wear for the outing. But then you have the women who pay attention to the smallest detail. If you look closer to their ‘accessories’ sometimes you can point it out but sometimes you really can’t. Getting your nails done is always a fun thing to do, you can go buy yourself and make friends with your artist or you can go with a group of friend or you can do it yourself and have a sense of pride that you can actually paint within the lines. I often do my nails myself, one because it’s expensive and two I feel like an artist. That’s where OPI comes in to play, when using OPI everyone can be an artist. This year’s slogan will make every girl feel like Pablo Picasso; “A critical component is learning about the audience—the targeted, specified group of people at whom you are aiming your message, design, and solution. The audience is the main group who would purchase this product, utilize this information or service, or patronize this entity or brand.”( Pg 16). What girl doesn’t want to get dressed up , and what girl doesn’t take pride into something they didn’t make or painted!? As a person in the business field I always take pride into seeing a small product succeed. However I also take pride in to the smallest detail as well, so when anyone notices I smile and say thank you and feel successful. Everyone can be an artist targets those who want to feel a sense of pride in the work they put in a small project, such as doing ones nails. It seems like an easy task for some, but to get the right color that matches your skin, to the stroke of the brush on to the nail takes time and patients. “Creative advertising requires the communication of a meaningful message to an audience through an idea, expressed through the visual design and copy. Formulating an idea necessitates research, analysis, interpretation, inference, and reflective and creative thinking.”( Pg 20) The message of “Everyone can be an artist”, not only will we help people see art in a different way but we will show that the consumer is partaking in to the nail art movement as well.

EOC: Week 8 My Slogan

Week 8 BOC: Progress on Final Project.

I really gave it a lot of thought on what I should do for my project. I am going to keep with the same slogan of “everyone can be an artist”, because while I was doing my nails I honestly thought I was an artist. But I also thought of revamping it a bit; the museum idea is good but I would want to change up the demographic to just an all male and one female cast. I feel that if I have a variety of people there it kind of looses the appeal of nail polish. When a girl wears nail polish it is because they want the opposite sex to notice them. And let’s face it some guys do like girls with nice hands so if I change it up to all guys it will give the nail polish some sex appeal.
For the nail polish itself I really have a been stuck with either going with something with glitter or a solid color that’s so bold you can see it from a mile away, something like a bright blue or a crimson red.  Each of OPI’s nail products have a name so I kind of want to tie that in but I’m not sure how. I was thinking about tying it in with her clothing but then again that really wouldn’t make sense. So I didn’t go with that idea, but with the clothing I did think about what the girl is going to wear. She’s in a museum so she has to look somewhat sophisticated but not overly dressed, so a mini black dress if I go with a brighter color, with minimal accessories;  but if I go with a darker color I would think about what color would contrast to like a dark navy blue. I want the color and the cleanliness to be see with her hands so that you can see the nail polish doesn’t leave any stray marks and it looks perfect. Just like a painting on the wall she’s looking at. So far I just want everything around the model to be simple but her nail polish to be extravagant.

Week 6 EOC: Vintage Ads

You can tell that advertising has gone a long way because the ads are all different, one goes from telling you information about the product then the other two tell you a story. We’re all used to the story being tied in to commercials, but today sometimes we don’t even see the product. In these ads you can see them and you can tell that the madmen were thinking about the consumer and not getting the attention of the consumer. In the Py o Pay ad it just tells you what it does and what the benefit was. Tooth brush commercial today honestly don’t have any instruction to it now and they just get to the point, but they do that by story. This guy is just sitting down behind a desk and is just talking about the benefits of the tooth brush. I know that a toothbrush is to cleanse my teeth but this one has a pick at the end that helps you get deeper into your gums. I’d honestly turn this off if I saw it on my television now; I don’t have time to listen to any of the benefits of a pick at the end. I just need to know that the toothbrush will keep me healthy and we are good to go. But it was surprising when I found out what Flouristan was and how it was used with CREST I was surprised. I like this ad to be quite honest, it tells me what it does and what it has in the tooth paste and it actually has people in it. The Ipana ad was the cutest it had a cartoon character and who doesn’t like cartoon characters. This is a good way to get the kids attention because if they didn’t kids would probably hate brushing their teeth. I know for a fact that my nephew sometimes hates brushing his teeth. BUT if he saw that a little squrrle singing on television and tells him about toothpaste he’d ask me to buy it and tell me he wants to brush his teeth. I want to see that come back, because it’s kind of hard for kids to get in to heigen benefits. If I saw that Py-O-Pay commercial I’d turn off the TV or I’d flip the channel but if I saw the Ipana one I’d go out and buy it.

EOC: Super Bowl Ads

I absolutely loved this commercial when it aired! This Super Bowl really didn’t have a lot of commercials that I liked, but when this one aired I absolutely LOVED IT! The concept of the little boy asking “dad where do babies come from?, made me smile. I didn’t expect the dad to literally go to the point of saying “oh well there’s a planet called baby-land-ie-ah” and he went on and explained that it was a world of just babies and when they’re ready they get sent to their families here on earth. For one I didn’t expect him to create such a story, the concept of having a baby planet and them being sent to earth on a rocket when they’re ready is different. It’s not the cliché story of the stork coming down and sending a family a baby that’s meant for them. That’s what made me drawn to the commercial it was out of the box and it had the story. But what made it so entertaining is when the little boy explains to the dad that his friend had said that “babies come from when mommies and daddy’s- UVO play wheels on the bus!” And then the car plays the song; that was just so hilarious to me. I’ve never really paid any attention to Kia and their commercials but they tie into the family value. Not only do they do that but they made it so realistic. I feel that no little kid hasn’t asked that question, and their father or mother doesn’t make up some random story about where babies do come from. Every growing family needs a car; it has to be spacious, kid friendly, and also have awesome features; just like the radio that plays with voice recognition. Having this commercial air during the Super Bowl was really smart and I bet you anything families will walk in to Kia with in commercial in mind.

women in advertising

When thinking about body image you often go back to what ads tell us. I mean of course they’re portraying the “typical body” and we’re supposed to love the “typical body” we all are supposed to have. But times have changed and things are supposed to be better for women in ads. The average body isn’t a size zero, have average size breast and wonderful skin. But as we see in this Victoria Secret ad we have pretty models with nice bodies as well as nice faces and nice skin. That’s nice to see sometimes but does Victoria Secret know that not EVERYONE looks like that? Does the advertising department know that the average size of an American woman isn’t a size zero; yet here they are using models that are probably wearing pants that are a small size. I’m defiantly not the average size of these women at all. To see them say love your body and show one type just tells me that they’re pretty narrow minded in what they think everyone looks like. I can love my body even though I wear a size large in a shirt. Victoria secret literally tells me that I can’t love myself and no one will love me if I don’t look like that. They tried to portray a wonderful message of “love your body” but completely failed at it because they only used one size. With this 50s ad it’s a bit different if you look at it you can see it’s about how being skinny isn’t okay. The tag line says “Men wouldn’t look at me when I was skinny but since I gained 10 pounds this new, easy way I have all the dates I want!” This ad is for a yeast supplement called Ironized Yeast; these are tablets that make you gain some weight. This tablet will give you good health, nice curves and nice skin. Back then you would have thought that they would actually prefer the skinny girls. But you can see that these girls do have some meat on them. This to me is what an ideal woman would look like; one that has all around curves and some weight on the side where the bones are hidden.

The difference between these two ads is mind blowing. One ad promotes that having curves is okay but the other one is promoting to love our bodies yet they have one size and not a variety. At times I find it hard to believe that it has come to this. How at one point in time it was okay for a woman to show off her curves and to the point where it’s not okay, because they see ads like Victoria Secret and they see the skinny models and then some women think that since I don’t look like this I’m not sufficient enough to be the average woman.

Being in the fashion field I don’t want anyone to feel that they aren’t fit for high end apparel or any apparel for that matter, just because they see a skinny model they can’t feel just as beautiful as them. It’s my personal goal for woman to be comfortable in their skin. I want them to feel like because they have curves they can get anyone they want in whatever clothes they were to buy. Woman and MEN of any size have every opportunity to love themselves and to be loved whether they are big, small, light skinned, dark skinned; we should all love who we are an embrace it.
